The Master of Arts degree course "Inclusive and Elementary Education" is a four semester long, research-oriented course of study which qualifies its graduates to work in sought-after fields of profession and research. Both the Department of School Education and the Department of Special Needs Education are responsible for this degree programme. Along with the basic area of study, which is obligatory for all students, in the Master`s course a main focus is chosen from the specialisation area. The educational Master course of study builds onto the Gießen Bachelor degree course "Early Childhood Education" (taught in German) but is also matching with other educational Bachelor degree courses. It opens opportunities in the professional area of "education applied to impairment of emotional and social development", "education and rehabilitation applied to people with mental disability", "remedial language education" and "early childhood". The Master`s course also qualifies students for a research-oriented professional career beginning in the form of studies for a doctorate.
The characteristic of this degree course is the "research studies". It allows the connection of practice and theory, of research and appliance as it is required in educational sciences at University as well as in professional areas.

Entrance requirements

For acceptance into the Master`s course Elementary and Integrative Education it is necessary to have completed the Bachelor`s course in Early Childhood Education at JLU Gießen or a Bachelor`s course (or equivalent academic qualification) in educational sciences at another university with a recognized section of the studies dealing with early childhood education, involving no less than 50 cp (credit points) or 32 weekly hours per semester with an additional amount of 14 cp on qualitative and quantitative research methods, of which 8 cp can be acquired retrospectively, parallel to the course.
Above all the following academic qualifications are accepted as equivalent: Diploma and Magister in educational sciences as well as teaching degree programmes including at least 50 cp or 32 weekly hours per semester in Early Childhood Education plus 14 cp in qualitative and quantitative research methods, of which 8 cp can be acquired retrospectively, parallel to the course.
During the application and admission procedure the board of examiners can recognize other degree courses after looking at them individually and if applicable, giving an entrance test. Up until this point the studies must include a subject profile containing an element of educational sciences with the above-mentioned noticeable requirement of an equal emphasis on early childhood education.
