International Language Certificates for English

Below you will find information about the most important internationally recognized language exams. These exams are not offered at the ZfbK, but we will be happy to advise you at any time if you need information regarding preparation, registration, etc.

TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication)

The TOEIC assesses communication skills in professional situations and is offered in Listening and Reading (paper-based) and Speaking and Writing (internet-based) versions.
You can take the TOEIC at the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM), among other places: The Language Center offers test dates several times a year.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

IELTS is an internationally recognized test available in two versions for different groups of users: General Training (for professional purposes) and Academic (for study purposes). IELTS is accepted by most universities in Great Britain, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada as well as by many universities in the USA as proof of sufficient English language skills. The test consists of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing sections. The test results are valid for two years.

The ZfbK regularly offers an IELTS preparation course during the semester break.

TOEFL iBT and TOEFL ITP-Test

The TOEFL iBT is an admission requirement for English-language studies at many universities, especially in the USA. It consists of the sections Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. The test results are valid for two years.
Detailed information in English can be found at www.toefl.org.

The TOEFL also has a shortened, less comprehensive version, the TOEFL ITP test, which consists of Listening, Writing, and Grammar. However, due to its less comprehensive format, the TOEFL ITP test is not universally accepted as a language proficiency test for admission and is not equivalent to the TOEFL iBT. Please check with the institution to which you wish to apply to determine which version is recognized there.
