The 2-year Master of Science in Psychology has been on offer at JLU since winter semester 2010/11. The MSc in Psychology qualifies graduates for independent work as a psychologist in research and practice. As to that the studies the Master programme in Psychology imparts in-depth methodological and scientific knowledge as well as professional and research-practical competences. It prepares students for supervisory and independent work in various professional areas (health and social services, education, science, administration, industry, the legal system). The Master in Psychology also gives all its students the possibility to design their studies in such a way as to fulfil the requirements for further postgraduate education in the general area of psychology, and particularly for further education in the field of psychotherapy and for a doctorate.

Since winter semester 2011/12 JLU offers a structured, study-related programme preparing students for doctoral studies ("PreProPsych").

Entrance requirements

For admission to the Master degree programme Psychology the following preconditions must be met:

Completion of a subject-related course of study comprising a minimum of 6 semesters (with a total of 180 CP) leading to a Bachelor in Science (B.Sc.) in Psychology or an equivalent degree. A degree is subject-related and equivalent if it meets the following criteria:

1. Psychological modules comprising at least 120 CP

2. Internship/practical training in Experimental Psychology (at least 9 CP)

3. Module(s) with examination in Psychological Methodology (at least 9 CP)

4. Examination in Psychological Diagnostics (at least 6 CP)

5. At least 4 modules (6 CP minimum each) including examinations in the following basic subjects:

General Psychology, Biological Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Differential / Personality Psychology, Social Psychology

6. At leaste 2 modules including exams (minimum 6 CP) in psychologial practical subjects such as Clinical Psychology, Personnel and Organisational Psychology, Educational Psychology

7. Empirical Bachelor's Thesis

The requirement for acceptance into the Master`s course is a final mark of "good" or better.

The faculty board of examiners decides on admission to the Master degree course as well as on exceptions.

  • The degree course is limited internally.
  • The application deadline of JLU Gießen is July 31 for the winter semester 2021/22.

Composition of degree programme

The course of study consists of a core curriculum, modules dealing with the basics and with application-oriented aspects and the specialisation modules. The core curriculum particularly comprises methodological subjects (research methods and diagnostics). These core modules are obligatory for all students. In these modules the methodological knowledge acquired in the Bachelor`s course will be gone into in greater depth. A work placement (Berufsfeldpraktikum), a teaching research project (Lehrforschungsprojekt) and an ancillary subject (Referenzfach) are also elements of the core curriculum.

Apart from the core curriculum students can chose individual focus areas by chosing and combining basics-oriented, application-oriented and specialization modules. Admission to the specific focus areas is limited. As a rule, the degree course can always be studied without chosing focus areas. The following focus areas can be chosen:

  • Focus area „Cognitive Psychology“
  • Focus area „Behavioral Neuroscience“
  • Focus area „Perception and Action“
  • Focus area „Development and Disorders in the Development of Children“
  • Focus area „Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy“
  • Focus area „Educational-Psychological Intervention and Evaluation Research"
  • Focus area “Personnel Psychology and Organizational Behavior (PPOB)”

The course of studies is completed with a Master`s thesis.
