The iFZ

Securing biological resources using basic research into complex biological systems is the vision of the interdisciplinary Research Center for Biosystems, Land Use and Nutrition (IFZ) at the Justus Liebig University. The meeting of scientists from different disciplines encourages pioneering research at the frontiers of agricultural science, ecology, nutritional sciences and biotechnology at all relevant scales of our environment.

The iFZ is a Justus Liebig University Giessen research infrastructure. Securing bioloical resources using basic research into complex biological systems is the vision of the interdisciplinary Research Center for Biosystems, Land Use and Nutrition (iFZ) at the Justus Liebig University. The meeting of scientists from different disciplines encourages pioneering research at the frontiers of agricultural science, ecology, nutritional sciences and biotechnology at all relevant scales of our environment.

The iFZ is headed by a centre board, supported by a research manager. Since June 2023, Prof. Dr. Michael Frei holds the position of Speaker of the iFZ. Members of the centre board are Prof. Dr. Emily Poppenborg Martin and Prof. Dr. Till Kleinebecker. Dr. Edwin Weber is iFZ manager.

The interdisciplinary Research Centre (iFZ) at the Justus Liebig University was founded as a result of the university’s outstanding ability in both environmental and life sciences. Today, the building houses 12 departments, about 400 scientists, technicians and administrators, and more than 10.000 m² of work space for a wide spectrum of activities. As a centre for applied life sciences, the iFZ is located at the heart of the natural science campus with its facilities in biology, chemistry and physics, and is only a step away from the university hospital centre. This central location supports the exchange of methods and technology and the transfer of concepts, and ensures successful interdisciplinary research.
