ZEU in brief
What is ZEU?
Established in 1998, ZEU is a hub that tackles global development and environmental challenges through a blend of policy analysis, natural science and collaborative field research. As one of eight interdisciplinary research centers of JLU, it enables members to co create evidence based solutions that accelerate sustainable development, particularly in the Global South.
Focus Areas
ZEU focuses on three core research topics
- Land Use: we apply a systems approach connecting land use with food, environment, and socio-economic structures
- Climate and Environment: we study changes in the earth system driven by human activities and physical processes and their governance
- One Health: we analyze intricate relationships between human, animal, and environmental health to tackle complex health challenges[RT2.1][RT2.2]
Interdisciplinarity and internationality
ZEU brings together researchers from diverse disciplines to work collaboratively on some of today’s most pressing global challenges. If you’re motivated by the core research topics or the Sustainable Development Goals, ZEU offers the ideal environment to engage in trulycross-cutting, solution-oriented research.
The center’s research is grounded in global cooperation, with many projects carried out in close partnership with institutions and researchers in the Global South.

For JLU-members
Your ZEU projects also count towards your individual performance-based funding allocation (LOMZ) of your faculty, and thus ensures an enhanced performance. Your ZEU projects also count towards your faculty’s performance-based funding allocation (LOMZ), thereby improving your performance record. Furthermore, JLU-members are entitled to vote at the ZEU General Assembly.

- Collaboration with other researchers and institutions, mainly from the Global South
- Interdisciplinary work environment within the ZEU community
- Opportunities to participate in existing research projects
How to become a ZEU member
Membership
There are three ways to become a member:
- signing an employment contract with ZEU
- applying for a membership
Final Steps
The ZEU Board will decide on your application within four weeks. After acceptance, you will be added to the ZEU mailing list, which will ensure you receive regular information about activities and events.We will add you to the ZEU website as a team member. You will have your own page there. Members are requested to use the ZEU affliation in publications and communication. Please note that being affliated with JLU does not give you an additional ZEU email address.
