Call for Applications: Post Doc Scholarship (36 months) in the Research Project: Negotiating Democracy: Schools and the Politics of Education in the Colombian Peace Process

The project „Negotiating the Future of Democracy – Schools and the Politics of Education in the Colombian Peace Process” is a collaborative effort of the Justus Liebig University Giessen, the Colombian German Institute for Peace, and the Georg Eckert Institute Braunschweig, funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation. The goal of the project is to investigate educational politics, media and practices in Colombia. The project has an initial duration of 12 months with a possible extensionsofup to 24 months depending on the foundations’ approval. During this time a team of two post-doc researchers supervised by Prof. Dr. Stefan Peters and Prof. Dr. EckhardtFuchs will analyze whether and how education reforms in Colombia react to the armed conflict and develop policies and pedagogic approaches for fostering democracy and sustainable peace. Moreover, the researchers will investigate pedagogic practices and materials in order to assess how these policies are implemented, resisted or appropriatedby a variety of actors within and around the education system.

Tasks:

  • Empirical Research on the Role of Education in the Current Colombian Peace Process with focus on textbook analysis and pedagogical practicesincluding fieldwork in Colombia;
  • Preparation of academic publications and academic events on the tole of education for the peace process and the democracy in Colombia;
  • Coordination with the project team and stakeholders from politics, education and civil society

Requirements:

  • Ph.D in Political Science, Sociology or Education 
  • Experience with empirical research with qualitative methodsrelated to Education, Democracy and/or Peace and Conflict Studies
  • Experience and disposition to conduct research in conflictive, ruralenvironments 
  • Disposition for frequent and prolonged research travels
  • Good knowledge of Latin America and Colombia
  • Excellent language skills in English and Spanish; Working Knowledge of German
  • Intercultural Competences
  • Experience with organizing academic events and scientific publications

Conditions:

  • Monthly Scholarship 2.300,-€ / 36 months
  • Allowances for Fieldwork in Colombia
