This conference brings together international experts from Europe, Latin America, and the United States and is devoted to the question of how catastrophes of great magnitude, here understood as man-made disasters, are narrated in the literature of the 20th and 21st centuries, and how the European Holocaust, as a “travelling memory” (Erll), has been received and trans-formed within specific communities of memory, and how it has been functionalized as a “universal trope” and “powerful prism” (Huyssen)

MontagWorkshop: Transcription, Annotation and Analysis of Multimodal Data
This workshop offers a hands-on introduction to the transcription, annotation, and analysis of multimodal interaction data, with a specific focus on hand gestures and facial gestures. Participants will explore key methodological decisions involved in working with multimodal data — from segmenting, categorizing, and coding gestural and facial conduct in dedicated annotation tools to analyzing their respective function.

MittwochWorkshop 2: FREMDREPRÄSENTATIONEN IN AUSSTELLUNGS- UND AUFFÜHRUNGSMEDIEN (1850-1950)
Der zweite Workshop betrachtet Fremdrepräsentationen von Sinti*zze und Rom*nja in Ausstellungs- und Aufführungsmedien. Untersucht wird, wie beispielsweise in Oper/ette, Féerie, Vaudeville oder Weltausstellung Alteritätskonstruktionen als alternative Wissensformate multimodal in Szene gesetzt werden, um die Schaulust am Unbekannten, Ungewöhnlichen und Spektakulären zu bedienen. Es geht u.a. um eine nähere Bestimmung spektakulärer Wissensvermittlung mit Schwerpunkten auf Performativität und multimodaler Ästhetik.
