»Revisiting the Scaling of Theory of Mind Tasks«
Theory of Mind (ToM) – the ability to attribute mental states to oneself and others – is often assessed using the ToM scale by Wellman and Liu (2004), which assumes a universal developmental sequence. While this sequence has been supported in Western samples, findings from countries like China and Iran suggest cross-cultural variation. Increasingly, evidence also points to intracultural variability, highlighting the role of contextual and developmental factors (e.g., Haskaraca & Ilgaz, 2023; Ilgaz et al., 2022).
My upcoming study will re-examine ToM task sequencing in German preschoolers, with a particular focus on the role of task order. Previous research (e.g., Kristen et al., 2006) suggests that performance may vary depending on presentation order of the tasks, challenging the idea that ToM scale captures conceptual growth. In addition to testing children with different task orders, we will assess their executive function and language skills to explore whether these abilities explain individual differences in performance and sensitivity to task order. The study aims to contribute to a more nuanced understanding of ToM development and task scaling – moving beyond broad cultural comparisons to consider variability within cultural contexts.
