We study the elementary particles subject to the strong interaction, quarks and gluons. Quarks are the building blocks of protons and neutrons ("matter particles"), but they can also combine to other composite particles. Gluons hold quarks together ("interaction particles").
Based on quantum chromodynamics, or in short QCD, which is the theory describing the strong interaction, we use functional methods to explore how quarks and gluons make up hadrons like the proton or the neutron. Functional methods provide a means to describe emergent phenomena like dynamical mass creation and confinement.
