VPN (English Version)

On this page you will find information on how to install a VPN connection to the netword of the University of Giessen:
The basic condition for using VPN is a valid HRZ user ID with network password, as well as the Cisco AnyConnect client.

In General

For access to the JLU network via VPN the software Cisco AnyConnect is used. Cisco AnyConnect sets up a VPN tunnel to the JLU network and is usable for all applications. Cisco AnyConnect for Windows, Linux and macOS computers is available for download for members of the JLU. For the download you need your HRZ user ID and your network password:

For the Google Android und Apple iOS operating systems, the Cisco AnyConnect version can be downloaded in the corresponding app store.

The general VPN gateway for all installations is: vpn.uni-giessen.de

 

The VPN gateway for Zoom is: zoomx-vpn.uni-giessen.de

Please note that this VPN access can only be used for Zoom. It is not possible to use other JLU resources from home that are only accessible from the JLU data network (e.g. Winfile).

 

Limitations

Currently, a concept for restarting the system is still being developed, based on current security requirements. VPN access as before the cyber attack is not possible. Due to the Corona pandemic, VPN has been made abailable to employees with some limitations.

All services that are accessible via Internet can also be accessed via VPN. In addition, the following services can be reached:

  • key services such as SAP and the file servers winfile and data1

  • ssh-access to all decentralized servers in the departments and centers

  • Remote desktop-access to all decentralized servers in the departments and centers

  • special decentralized services such as web servers, file and license servers in the departments and centers

Only traffic to Zoom is routed through the VPN tunnel via the VPN gateway for Zoom (see above). This is done to hide your private IP address from Zoom. JLU internal services are not accessible via the VPN gateway for Zoom. All other services on the Internet are still accessible to you via the Zoom-VPN tunnel.
 

Not accessible

The licensed electronic meida of the library system cannot be reached via VPN! However, they are available in the JUSTfind portal via EZ-Proxy. For more information, please visit the library system pages:

WebVPN

Unfortunaltely, WebVPN can no longer be offered. The Java technology used is no longer supported by current browsers. The developer of the VPN solution has discontinued further product developments.
