Inner-Shell Ionization and Fragmentation of Isolated Endohedral Fullerene Ions by XUV Radiation

Endohedral fullerenes are fascinating objects that have captured the imagination of scientists in the basic and applied sciences. Examples for the many ideas under discussion are the use of endohedral fullerenes in photovoltaics, quantum computing, medical imaging, or tumor therapy. The experimental challenge when working with endohedral fullerenes is that these rare molecules are available only in very small quantities. Nevertheless, researchers from the Atomic and Molecular Physics Group (headed by S. Schippers) succeeded in irradiating mass- and charge selected q-fold charged Lu3N@C80q+ (q=1-3) endohedral fullerene ions with energetic photons from the PETRAIII synchrotron operated by DESY in Hamburg. Element specific information about the molecular electronic structure was obtained by tuning the photon energy across various atomic absorption edges. The figures show the signal from the carbon cage in various Lu3N@Cnq+ -> Lu3N@Cmr+ [short-hand notation (n,q)->(m,r)] reaction channels which were individually measured [J. Hellhund et al., Phys. Rev. A 92, 013413 (2015)].
