Ultrafast Optics Uncover Contrasting Quantum Dynamics in MoSe₂ Monolayers vs. (Ga,In)As Quantum Wells
In a joint effort led by researchers from Justus Liebig University Giessen and TU Berlin, scientist have directly observed and microscopically modeled the fundamentally different nonlinear optical responses of MoSe₂ monolayers and (Ga,In)As quantum wells. The experimental samples were provided by researchers from TU Dresden, the National Institute for Materials Science in Japan, and Philipps-Universität Marburg. Their study, published August 29th 2025, reveals how Coulomb correlations and quantum confinement govern Rabi splitting, Rabi oscillations, and biexciton formation in these two material platforms.
Key Findings
- (Ga,In)As quantum wells exhibit nearly linear Rabi splitting, pronounced Rabi oscillations, and coherent optical gain.
- MoSe₂ monolayers show sublinear splitting and dominant biexciton signatures that suppress Rabi oscillations.
“These contrasting behaviors reflect the unique many-body physics in each system,” explains Prof. Sangam Chatterjee (JLU Giessen). Prof. Andreas Knorr (TU Berlin) adds, “Our microscopic theory captures these complex interactions and expands the understanding of nonlinear ultrafast interactions from atomic to various solid-state systems.”
The findings open new avenues for coherent light control in future ultrafast optoelectronic devices and demonstrate the power of theoretical modeling in capturing complex quantum phenomena in advanced condensed matter systems.
