31.10.2023 – Bridging gaps and knowledge exchange across borders: SDGnexus Network's October 2023 highlights

Giessen, 31 October – The SDGnexus Network was engaged in a wide spectrum of activities throughout October 2023, which included research exchange, teaching, and networking initiatives. These activities span from the beginning of the winter semester at the Justus Liebig University Giessen to interactive workshops and conferences held in Central Asia, specifically in Bishkek and Tashkent.

Expert Workshop addresses agricultural value chains in Central Asia

On 6th October, the University of Central Asia's Graduate School of Development, in partnership with the SDGnexus Network and German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ), hosted the Expert Workshop on Developing Agricultural Value Chains in Central Asia, held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Prof. Dr. Martin Petrick, one of the Principal Investigators of the SDGnexus Network, delivered a presentation titled "Challenges and opportunities for trans-border livestock value chains in Central Asia". Research Associates Dr. Sarah Robinson and Dr. Gulnara Dzhunushalieva also shared their insights on Animal Husbandry in the Rangelands of Central Asia Through the Lens of the SDGs and Innovations in the Development of a Sustainable Agri-food System in the Kyrgyz Republic, respectively. The workshop emphasized socio-economic aspects such as technology adoption, management enhancement, and integration along the value chain.

SDGnexus Network introduces research-based modules for the winter semester 2023/2024 at JLU Giessen

In the upcoming winter semester of 2023/2024, the SDGnexus Network is proud to offer two research-centric curricula for JLU Giessen's Master Degree Programs: Sustainable Transition and Transition Management. "Special Topics of the UN Sustainable Development Goals I", led by Dr. Alicia Correra, Dr. Sarah Robinson, and Dr. Christoph Funk, is a course covering Introduction to SDGs, Water-Energy-Food Nexus, and SDG nexus in food systems with a special focus on the livestock sector. The "Sustainable Water Management" course, developed by Dr. Iskandar Abdullaev and Dr. Aliya Assubayeva, delves into research areas including IWRM, transboundary water management, water security, SDG Interlinkages, and more. Both courses are conducted in English and delivered in an online format.

6th Tashkent Water Security Lecture discusses decision-making support under climate change in Central Asia

On 20th October, the Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization Engineers (TIIAME) National Research University (NRU) hosted the 6th Tashkent Water Security Lectures titled Decision Making Support to Improve Water Security under Climate Change in Central Asia. Under the aegis of GFZ Potsdam and GIZ as part of the Green Central Asia Initiative by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany, this event drew more than 50 participants from international and national organizations, universities, and think tanks. Guest Professor Dr. Iskandar Abdullaev of the SDGnexus Network delivered a keynote address on the impacts of water scarcity and climate change in Central Asia, highlighting the limited water resources in the region, high water dependency rates, and the impending exacerbation of these challenges due to climate change.
