Die Kartoffel als Chance

The potatoe as a chance

we see in the potato field: the true fairy tale of the power of performance in 6 pictures. It comes to our heads: the dream of the power of the individual and the desire for moving of the masses.
The potato was foreign and obnoxious to Europeans. Famine also did not convince them to handle these dangerous tubers. Now two performers stand in the empty field and wonder. Before they can think of any action, they are overrun by an army of Colorado potato beetles ...
"If you have the feeling that you can not think about the events, do not make the mistake of trying to understand them."

DISKURS 2019 - NEVER AGAIN. ARTS/TALKS/THEORY

The DISKURS34-Festival will take place in Gießen from 7 to 10 November 2019. This years edition is entitled never again. art/talks/theory. The international festival has been organised for 34 years on a voluntary basis by students of Applied Theatre Studies independently operated by Kunstrasen giessen e.V. In addition to theatre productions and performative works, the festival includes installations, films, lectures and lectures and offers artists, scientists and audiences the opportunity to engage in lively debate through various discussion formats. The focus is on experimental works that give new impulses to artistic research, both on an aesthetic and on a content level.
never again can be understood as a claim, a slogan, an oxymoron, an imperative or a social agreement. The title connects two mutually exclusive temporalities: the conclusion, the negation and the prohibition, which resonate in never and the repetition and incompleteness, which are contained in again. We use this dynamic as a starting point to examine the manifold implications of never again within contemporary production in arts and academia.

P R O G R A M
In their video performance "Agitation", the Leipzig artists Julia Lübbeke, Francis Kussatz and

Alexander Klaubert examine current and historical forms of resistance and protest culture. In her work "PUKE LOVE", Italian artist Sara Leghissa addresses the physical dimensions of indignation and contradiction and interrupts everyday life with performative interventions.
Mareike Kajewski is a research assistant at the Institute of Philosophy at the University of Hildesheim. Her research interests include political philosophy, social philosophy and aesthetics. Her lecture "The Spontaneity of Revolutionary Action" develops the thesis that spontaneity as an experience of freedom in revolutionary action explains its form of execution and possibility.
In her performance "MEDUSA is GAIA", the Portuguese artist Sall Lam Toro decodes and updates the Medusa figure of Greek mythology from a queer-postcolonial perspective and questions the temporal structure of never again by means of repetition and re-signification. The Indonesian artist Kelvin Atmadibrata also negotiates within his performative installation "Forcing Hyacinth" the conflictive temporality of past and future, to which never again refers. The living sculpture designed by him refers to the ancient Greek mythological figure of Hyacinthus and interrogates memories and reflections on growing up. Jannis Steincke and Joschua Ben Pesch, two scientists of the "Rheinische Sektion der kompostistischen Internationalen" (Rhenish Section of the Compostist International), trace similar themes and in their lectures deal with the dimensions of heritage, responsibility and memory.
The video entitled "the[video]Flâneu® shoots Auschwitz" by Konstantinos-Antonios Goutos from Marburg puts the provocative thesis of a strolling camera walk through Auschwitz into space and in the resulting images addresses both the question of memory culture and the depiction of Auschwitz. Nina Rabuza studied philosophy and political science in Halle an der Saale and Berlin. In her lecture, she examines constellations of memory of National Socialist crimes in (Western) Germany. Starting from the design of the Dachau concentration camp memorial, she attempts to sketch the various meanings of memory after 1945. The focus is on the question of dimensions and conflicts of the demand "Never again!
never again, the Slovakian choreographer Alica Minarova takes on the challenge of declaring war on current inequalities in her dance piece "SAUDADE", in which she transfers classical movements from stripdance into new contexts and in this way questions a male gaze that has supposedly always been there. In her lecture performance "I PUT A SPELL ON YOU; DESCARTES; BECAUSE YOU MESSED UP MY LIFE ONCE", the Berlin artist and doctor Vera Piechulla examines the inherent power relations of the seemingly objective view of female anatomy in connection with this complex of themes. In her theoretical contribution "Feminist discourses on corporeality and deconstruction", Merve Winter discusses the apparent contrast between (de)constructivist and essentialist approaches using the example of medicine in relation to gender theories and shows where and how points of mediation between these two points of view can be found. Winter studied psychology at the Free University of Berlin. She is particularly interested in the connection between psychology and psychoanalysis from a socio-critical perspective and following critical theory.
Finally, the collective Avoec Performance, consisting of the Brazilian artist Luiza Moraes and the American artist Lori Baldwin, will thematize farewell in its lecture performance „Relic": How do we know that something is over, how can we say goodbye and how do we deal with different farewells? When do we know that something really can never happen again?

en plein air – Ethnographies of the Digital

En plein air – literally painting outdoors – was a polemic against the white walls of the studio. The same exercise of leaving the atelier in order to observe was formulated by Bronisław Malinowski as the most fundamental requirement of ethnology. Engaging with the digital en plein air, the book unites essays outlining the authors’ experiences, interviews and recordings, poems, collages working on semi-fiction and scientific texts. Thereby, disparate definitions, forms, and fields of the digital collide.

The book is published at the occasion of http://warehouse.industries. Together with two of the authors we invite you to launch en plein air with us: Tilman Richter speaks about the soon-to-be digital self and Bryana Fritz performs Indispensible Blue.

Tilman Richter: She KNOWS no Hatred
Despite its ceaseless efforts to disguise its own nature: the internet is text-based. It’s a

diagram, a list of lists, a form of book-keeping that distinguishes between order and noise, now and then, the self and its possessions. The form in which the internet rearranges the networks and relationships we live by can be found in writing and reading long before social networks came to life as billion dollar companies. Reading the diaries of Merve publisher Heidi Paris and author Rainald Goetz, Tilman Richter attempts an ethnography of the soon-to-be digital self.

Bryana Fritz: Indispensible Blue
Folders are opened and closed, lines appear, boxes light up, colors and sounds plop up – a desktop poem unfolds. If software exerts a choreographic force on its users, how can dance be a way to escape the pre-programmed patterns? With Indispensible Blue and the various forms it takes, Bryana Fritz continues to explore the uncanny valley between poetry and dance on the everyday user surfaces. Everything looks and sounds extra generic, but then the gloss of exactly that comes up, entangled in the glitch of the cursor movement.

Entanglements a speculative Collection

Come, sit down, leave your tracks, follow the tracks of others and let yourself be intervowen in this collective-association-process:
We invite you to take a moment to step outside of the busy TM, sit down at our desk and to participate in a collective cluster of associations, words, main- and accessory sentences. While adding new things, and thriving on that what has been written before, we ask you to enrich this open document, which is also the forerun to a project-yet-to-come, it with your trains of thought. There is a short introduction at the beginning of the document, no worries, it's very easy. We count on you; come by and become entangled!

ESTHETICS OF THE CUT: SCHNITTSTELLEN, DISCRETIZATION, BORDERING MIT BEZUG AUF KÖRPER, AKTIONEN UND RÄUME.

Esthetics of the cut invites you:

on Sunday 7 July from 11 a.m. for a public rehearsal and on Sunday 14 July from 3 p.m. for the final presentation in the Georg-Büchner Saal.

The chosen presentation format makes use of aesthetic-formal ideas and technical-material demands of the visual arts, in particular of media installation art, and of the language of action, techniques of addressing and the performative discourse of contemporary theater. It uses spatial curation as well as a timeline that both assembles autonomous contributions: video installations, actions and hybrid forms of performance and technical setup.

With contributions by Herbert Graf, Nadine Jachmann, Maren Küpper, Milka Luhtaniemi, Jannis Wulle, and the participation of Liora Epstein, Lea König; curated by Susanna Schoenberg.

The contributions arise from the examination of the cut-image, theme, gesture and technical necessity of this project.

Exploded Goo

Simple warning:
It is possible you will come and find a head looking at its own ass from a far, flashing tiny eyes giving a dirty look, biting stingy lip that makes annoying sound, one big belly, nails that don’t work anymore, a bit of a dance performed for the imaginary cat and some robot leg kicking.
This performance is a personal wish to challenge a normative and linear perception of a dancer’s body on stage by reclaiming a monstrous one, a body of many, a body in-between. It is a choreography as an exploded machine, inspired by cut-outs in photomontages and monsters with flaws. Zrinka Užbinec, graduate of the MA program "Choreography and Performance", explores a chimeric and montage-like perception of the dancing body, embracing interruptions and glitches in her own dance.

In cooperation with Hessischen Theaterakademie and Künstlerhaus Mousonturm

FLUCH DER AKRIBIK

Over several months, ScriptedReality worked in Gießen with collaborators from various contexts. Together, they explored the connections between work, nationalism and migration. Their collaboration led to “Fluch der Akribik” (“Curse of the Meticulean”) – an evening between B-movie and pie, rough, completely dilettante and an asserted detournement of the similarly named Disney film. A ship appears one day in a small Hessian town, and the jobcenter promotes it as an extraordinary (re-)integration measure wherein everyone will be given a position. The ship loosely disguises itself as an art project and could be just as cursed as the ghostship from the Carribean. Together, the freshly chartered wo(men) set out on an adventure through the tempests, rehearsal stages and German bureaucracy, unclear whether the ship is salvation or curse. The only thing that is certain is that everything must be called into question and reconsidered.
