Studying in Giessen

Studying at the Department of Geography

Studying at the Department of Geography is characterized by learning and discussions in small groups with individual support from the teaching staff. During their studies, students can pursue their own areas of interest independently and autonomously.

Practical relevance plays a special role during the course of study: students are involved and actively participate in current research projects in various research groups.

Furthermore, students can draw on a pool of professionally relevant geographical methods: For example, geostatistical methods, climate modeling, sedimentological laboratory analysis, field methods, interview and survey techniques for anthropogeographical primary data collection, and geographic information systems. The luminescence laboratory is particularly noteworthy: here, the department has the latest technologies in the field of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating.

Life in the University Town of Giessen

One prerequisite for successful studies is certainly that you feel comfortable where you study. In this respect, the university town of Giessen has a lot to offer. The city has the highest student density in Germany, and many areas of public life are shaped by students.

The city offers a rich cultural scene and a wide variety of pubs and cafés. And very important for students: Giessen is an urban area with short distances. Another advantage is Giessen's central location in Germany: the Frankfurt am Main metropolitan region in the south and the student city of Marburg in the north can be reached quickly by train.
