Overview

A Master's degree program in Mathematics usually follows the Bachelor in Mathematics. The content is therefore similar, but at a more advanced level. After laying the foundations in the Bachelor's degree, the Master's program focuses on general further education as well as specializing in a chosen field.

Profile

A degree program in mathematics is suitable for people who like to get to the bottom of things, recognize structures, solve problems creatively, and ponder questions with perseverance. This makes it significantly different from school mathematics. In addition to imparting subject knowledge, the focus is on training analytical thinking.

In Giessen, mathematics students benefit from particularly good academic support and establish personal contact with their lecturers early on. They can choose from a broad range of courses and thereby specialize in the areas of analysis, algebra, geometry, topology, stochastics, and numerical analysis. In general, Giessen is distinguished as the city with the highest student density in Germany.

Career Prospects

According to a popular saying, all the unemployed mathematicians in Germany could fit into a single bus. The fields of activity for many mathematicians in industry and commerce are not as widely known, largely because they are so diverse. Mathematicians are often sought after not primarily for their specific subject knowledge, but for the analytical skills they develop during their studies. Because of these abilities, mathematicians typically work in areas such as insurance, consulting, IT, and industry in controlling or data analysis.

Structure

Since the foundations were already laid during the Bachelor's program, the Master's program offers a high degree of flexibility. The specialization that began in the third year of the Bachelor's program is continued. In addition, other areas are studied in depth, which should draw from both pure and applied mathematics.

Preparation

We recommend that all incoming students participate in the preparatory course Mathematical Thinking.
There, you can experience both the mathematics and the course formats as they will be during your studies.
 
For anyone wishing to refresh their foundational mathematics from school, we offer the preparatory course General Mathematics.
This serves to consolidate basic knowledge, but is not a preparation for the analytical thinking required in university study.
