Thesis
- Influence of environmental factors on cattle breeding in Namibia – Some cattle breeds do really well in Namibia, others less so. How did these good breeds develop? What is the role of environmental factors in this development? The aim of the MSc thesis is to find out which spatial environmental data is available and how these can be used meaningfully to analyse the influence of environmental factors on the expression of genetic traits and the breeding value of cattle. (data analysis, GIS)
- Weather and management influences on tree growth in an agroforestry system – 30 dendrometers were installed in the agroforestry system GH1 at Gladbacherhof to compare the growth of 3 apple tree varieties and poplars under different management interventions. Six of the 12 poplars observed were cut back at the end of May. The question is whether there are differences in growth dynamics between the species/varieties and the management interventions. (field work, data analysis)
- Influence of climate and land use on precipitation and discharge in Kenyan catchments – We have a long-term data set (2015 to 2021) of rainfall and streamflow from different monitoring sites in Kenya. We would like to analyse the data for seasonal and inter-annual differences and compare runoff dynamics between different land use types to assess the impact of land use (tropical montane forest vs. agriculture) on water availability. (data analysis)
- Efficient orchard irrigation – The Verein für Gartenbau und Landschaftspflege Inheiden e.V. wants to make its orchard fit for the future. This work involves developing irrigation recommendations based on the currently installed irrigation system and weather conditions. (field work, data analysis)
