Industrial Internship - Important Informations (FAQ)

Important Informations for Students of the degree programme Agrobiotechnology

Short URL: https://www.uni-giessen.de/phyto/teaching/industrial-internship

For Students who started their studies in the degree programme Agrobiotechnology this winter semester 2022/23:
The Industrial Internship (MK-019) is now a profile module with the module code MP-196. Therefore, the industrial internship is voluntary for these students. They can now decide between an internship OR two profile modules. However, we very much recommend an internship as we consider this experience essential for your future professional career.

For students who started studying before the winter semester 2022/23:
You still have to complete the internship as a core module (MK-019). In case you want to change to the new examination regulation and do two profile modules instead you need to officially apply for a change to the new examination regulation at the examination office. Please contact the examination office via studies@fb09.uni-giessen.de.

The FB 09 has made two overviews for all international study programs with the respective core modules. They can all be found on this website:
https://www.uni-giessen.de/en/faculties/f09/studies/while-studying/cmp

Before WS 22/23: 8 core modules plus the internship are compulsory, so a total of 10 core modules (10, because the internship is counted as two modules) and in addition 6 profile modules.

Since WS 22/23: 8 core modules are compulsory and in addition 8 profile modules or 6 profile modules + internship.

As already described above, a change to the new regulation with the freedom of choice for the internship is possible in principle, but must be applied for at the examination office beforehand. Please contact the examination office via studies@fb09.uni-giessen.de.

More Informations about the Internship Module

The minimum duration of the internship is approx. 8-9 weeks (360h) and is to be accomplished within the lecture-free period between the 3rd and 4th semesters. Students may, however, choose a different time period for their internship.

Regarding the minimum duration of the internship, we refer to the special regulations of the Master's degree programmes "Agricultural Sciences, Ecotrophology and Environmental Management" (7.36.09 Nr.1) of the Justus Liebig University Giessen
(http://www.uni-giessen.de/mug/7/findex36.html/7_36_09_1_AOeU, German language only).

The maximum duration of the internship is 6 months (120 days, full-time = 24 weeks á 5 days).
In principle, international students must observe the permitted number of working days with their visa: 120 full or 240 half days per year. A compulsory internship (8-9 weeks / 360 hours) prescribed in the degree programme is exempt from this regulation.
Whether a longer internship may also be considered a complete compulsory internship, even though only 9 weeks are prescribed in the study regulations, is something students should clarify beforehand with the person in charge at the Foreigners' Registration Office (Ausländerbehörde).

Note!
During the Corona pandemic, the exception was that the industrial internship could also be completed at a JLU institute. Since the abolition of all Corona rules on 11 April, this exception has also been lifted, i.e. the internship MUST again be completed outside JLU Giessen at one of our industrial partners.

Module Registration

It is not possible to register for the module via StudIP.

The internship must be registered and approved before it begins. Normally this is registered with the examination office, but Agrobiotechnology students should send the completed form to us (Patrick.Schaefer cc Susanne.Habermehl).
You can find the relevant form here.

Examination Registration

For these module, there is no exam registration via FlexNow!

Students send the following documents to the module coordinator, Prof. Dr. Patrick Schäfer, after they have completed their internship:
1. the form completed by the student and signed by the examination office (see above) for registration and approval of the internship.
2. the form "Nachweis über geleistetes Praktikum / Proof of internship" completed and signed by the internship supervisor, which you can download here.
3. contrary to the information given in the guidelines of the faculty 09 for the industrial internship under point 2, students of the study programme Agrobiotechnology are NOT required to submit an internship report!
At the end of the internship, we require a signed report from your company containing information about the duration and period of the internship, as well as your tasks, activities, acquired knowledge and an evaluation of your work.

After completion of the internship, these three documents (in paper or digital form) must be submitted to the module coordinator, Prof. Dr. Patrick Schäfer, for recognition. An appointment will then be made for an oral examination.

If all documents are complete and the oral examination has been passed, the examination documents and the certificate are sent to the examination office and your performance is entered in FlexNow.
