Accumulation of pharmaceuticals in paddy soils

Robert-Bosch Stiftung: Sustainable Partners – Partners for Sustainability

Project: Accumulation of pharmaceuticals in paddy soils irrigated with polluted river water and their transfer to crops

Principal investigators: Prof. Jan Siemens with Prof. Hongyan Guo (Nanjing University)

Period: 2012-2016

Summary:

Rice is often irrigated with polluted surface water or wastewater that contain in addition to plant nutrients also pollutants like residues of pharmaceuticals. Also with organic fertilizers, these pollutants can reach rice fields. We investigate the accumulation of residues of pharmaceuticals in rice soils and in how far these residues are taken up by rice plants.
