May 26, 2026 from 02:00 to 04:00 (Europe/Berlin / UTC200)
This workshop introduces participants to accessible digital tools and concepts for text mining, visualization, and analysis, with a focus on exploring how computational approaches can support their own research questions and ideas.
I will provide a brief introduction to the core principles behind models such as word2vec and neural networks, focusing on large language models (LLMs). LLMs are the foundations of chatbots such as ChatGPT, and we will discuss their potential and limitations for work in the humanities as well as their prevalent ethical problems.
We will then look at web-based resources such as Voyant Tools, AntConc, and spaCy. These platforms offer a low-threshold entry point for explorative analysis of patterns, keywords, and linguistic structures in corpora.

The Skill-Swap Workshop Series is a student initiative hosted by the GCSC. Inspired by the constant interdisciplinary exchange between doctoral candidates at the centre, the workshop series offers an official outlet for a peer-led knowledge transfer. Workshops are designed by candidates (FB03, FB04, FB05) and postdocs at the GCSC/GKK to swap research skills and expand teaching experience. This is an experimental initiative and a work in constant progress; if you have ideas, questions, feedback, or want to get involved as a facilitator, feel free to reach out: reqqa.salem-qubailat@gcsc.uni-giessen.de.
