Artificial intelligence can make research more efficient, streamlining literature review, helping with ideas, analyzing data, identifying gaps in our texts, and correcting their spelling and grammar. Or so we are told. In this workshop, rather than buying into industry-led narratives about the supposed potentials of AI, we will dive deep into the implications of delegating research tasks to an automated entity. Therefore, instead of a mainstream "AI skills" approach, where the optimal use of a given tool or the crafting of prompts is taught, we will focus on understanding how so-called "generative AI" tools work, what they are (in)capable of, how their use is affecting academic literature and sources, and how to contend with their ethical implications. The objective is to identify and practice the critical skills needed to keep our research ours in an age of increasing noise and homogeneity.

The Skill-Swap Workshop Series is a student initiative hosted by the GCSC. Inspired by the constant interdisciplinary exchange between doctoral candidates at the centre, the workshop series offers an official outlet for a peer-led knowledge transfer. Workshops are designed by candidates (FB03, FB04, FB05) and postdocs at the GCSC/GKK to swap research skills and expand teaching experience. This is an experimental initiative and a work in constant progress; if you have ideas, questions, feedback, or want to get involved as a facilitator, feel free to reach out: reqqa.salem-qubailat@gcsc.uni-giessen.de.
