Are you curious about a career in academia? This interactive workshop introduces academic teaching as a meaningful professional pathway. We’ll explore the roles and responsibilities of university educators, discuss career progression, and consider how teaching fits alongside research and service. Also, I will share insights and best practices drawn from my experience teaching at the BA, MA, and PhD levels.
Our discussion will also include reflecting on "Why I Write" by George Orwell and another essay inspired by it, sharing the same title, by Joan Didion. These timeless, personal texts invite us to explore the questions of voice, purpose, and the motivations behind intellectual work. Also, they will serve us as springboards to discuss the value of interpersonal, intercultural, and intergenerational dialogue that facilitates education and learning. By offering insights into the creative processes behind writing, they illuminate key aspects of the academic profession where writing plays a crucial role in both scholarly communication and teaching.
Whether you're actively planning an academic career or simply exploring possibilities, this workshop offers inspiration, reflection, and practical guidance. I would appreciate any questions regarding the topic beforehand. Please send these to Kasia Macedulska.
//Dr. Katarzyna Macedulska is assistant professor at Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, Poland.
