Cohorts 2026

In the current cycle of the mentoring programme “First Generation Doctorate”, 12 mentoring tandems have started. Over the course of one year, mentors and mentees engage in a confidential exchange that supports orientation within academia, makes experiences visible, and creates space for reflection. Each tandem organises the collaboration flexibly: typically, 3 to 4 meetings are arranged individually and can take place online, in person, or in a hybrid format, depending on needs and availability.

In addition to the 1:1 mentoring relationship, the programme offers accompanying formats such as workshops and networking opportunities that strengthen exchange beyond the tandem. Participants can also connect and stay in touch via digital platforms. Step by step, this creates a supportive community of first-generation academics across status groups, disciplines, and backgrounds—bringing together those who were the first in their family to enter higher education and who are shaping their path in academia.

Beyond the programme, the First-Generation Café (SoSe) provides an open, informal exchange space for all status groups to connect and share experiences.
