Have you ever heard a river speak? What would it tell us, if you did? How can we use today’s technologies to gain the capacity to listen to a river? For the residents of Giessen, the Lahn River is an integral part of their life, but do they treat this vital ecosystem as having a voice and specific needs or simply as a resource they can use and extract from? These are only a few of the questions science & art duo Danilo Olivaz & Ingvild Syntropia addressed as part of their Planetary Scholars & Artists in Residence Fellowship. During their three-month residency as summer fellows in the 2025 Planetary Agency & Politics cohort, they brought the Lahn River Avatar to ‘life’ as an AI-powered, interactive sculpture that houses a large language model (LLM) and enters into dialogue with Giessen’s human community in a female voice.

On 24 June 2025, the duo officially unveiled the avatar to the public at Lahnfenster Hessen . Olivaz & Syntropia opened the event with a project introduction followed by a guided river meditation, rounded off by a discussion session between the Avatar and the audience. Giessen’s Mayor, Alexander Wright , posed the first question: “ How do you feel about the fact that we can talk to you now? ” – The Lahn avatar expressed herself as in positive anticipation, hoping that the dialogues with Giessen’s humans may lead to more care for her ecosystem’s needs. Other questions addressed factual issues, such as, the Lahn’s current water temperature – which was 21.1°C at the time – or her concerns about the tentative plans to set up a recreational surfer’s wave within her waters.

The Lahn River Avatar is a beautiful statement where science blends with art. Permanently stationed and freely accessible to the public who visit Lahnfenster Hessen in Giessen, its physical shape sits within a tree stump-structure that is surrounded by local, natural upcycled material and LED lights, a bit of water from the river’s spring sitting at its core. Syntropia states that her main inspiration for the sculpture came from the Mirror of Galadriel in the Lord of the Rings. Symbolically and practically powered by the Lahn’s waters, the avatar draws on real-time data provided by environmental sensors that have been set up at Lahnfenster as well as on about 40 peer-reviewed scientific papers and documents on the interrelations between the Lahn and Giessen’s culture to formulate responses. The avatar’s digital version, its sensor data, a platform where anyone can upload new material for her to learn from, and some connected resources, can be accessed via this Linktree .

By means of the Avatar, the project triggers thoughts on what it could be like to have the Lahn River actively participating in political decisions that concern it. Building on the success of the precursor Rio Sagrado AI-Avatar in Brazil, the Lahn River Avatar “ offers a blueprint for planetary democracy through meaningful, cross-species dialogue, remembering a future where rivers speak and we listen ,” as Danilo and Ingvild say. Their creation constitutes both a poetic and a political aspiration that translates more symbolic ‘rights of nature’ approaches into practical terms.

The conception of a symbiocracy , on which the duo has build their Lahn River Avatar, emphasizes this much needed path of co-existence between human- and more-than-human beings. It represents a new model of socio-political organization based on the harmonious coexistence between various entities – humans, artificial intelligence, ecological systems, and economic structures. Opting out of the rigid hierarchies and competition for resources in our current system, it seeks to create an environment where interaction becomes a mutually beneficial and self-sustaining process ( Layer2State Foundation ).

Our heartfelt congratulations go to our two fellows Danilo & Ingvild for bringing this innovative project to the city of Giessen! Moreover, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Benjamin Deichert at Lahnfenster Hessen for his dedication while making this project a reality, to the team at MAGIE Makerspace Gießen for their invaluable support while building the sculpture, as well as to Bruno Decc for his videography and Johannes Guttandin at Veganatural for the delicious food & drinks at the reception!
