President

Prof. Dr. Katharina Lorenz has been President of Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) since 1 April, 2024. This is the first time a woman has headed JLU.

Professor Katharina Lorenz has been President of Justus Liebig University Giessen since April 1, 2024. Between 2021 and 2024, she has served as a member of JLU’s Executive Board as Vice President for Teaching and Learning. From October 2023 to March 2024, she headed the University as First Vice President during the vacancy of the presidency.
Professor Lorenz, born in 1974, is from Berlin. She studied Classical Archaeology, Ancient History and Greek Philology at the Free University of Berlin, Corpus Christi College Oxford, and the University of Heidelberg. After completing her Dr. phil. in Heidelberg in 2002, she worked as a Lecturer at JLU, followed by a Lectureship, then Associate Professorship and finally a Professorship of Classical Art and Archaeology at the University of Nottingham, UK.


Since 2018, she has been Professor of Classical Archaeology and Director of the Ancient Art Collection at JLU. Her research interests include ancient visual narratives, Roman painting and the domestic context, and the connection between intellectual history and digital technologies in the heritage sector.
