Rental bike system at JLU

A major innovation for all university stakeholders was the bikesharing service introduced in 2018 by the provider nextbike, now nextbike by TIER.

Today, a total of 360 seven-speed "Ecobikes" from the company nextbike by TIER, are available to students and all residents of the city of Giessen, at many stations close to the university in the campus areas of JLU and THM, as well as on other municipal properties.

All students can use Nextbike bicycles from 01.10.2022 for the first 45 minutes free of charge and borrow several bicycles on one account. The special conditions mentioned apply to two bicycles at the same time, a total of four bicycles can be borrowed per account at the same time. Also, the student conditions apply not only to Giessen, but also to many other cities in Germany.

But not only students benefit from the Nextbikesystem. JLU employees also have the opportunity to use the Nextbike bicycles for official job-related purposes, subject to approval. The costs incurred will be reimbursed to staff members upon request. The form for this can be found here.

Registration/Lending:

 - Users register individually with nextbike and thereby agree to the terms and conditions.

- Employees of the JLU register like all other users via the homepage, there are no selectable special rates for which one would have to authenticate explicitly.

- Only JLU students receive the special rates after individual user registration under the special "Campusbike" link of nextbike - the system authenticates the student status.

- Students must also re-authenticate with nextbike for each new semester (cut-off dates May 15 and November 15, respectively) in order to continue receiving the special conditions. Students will be notified by nextbike 14 days before the deadlines and will receive a link for re-authentication.

- Special conditions only apply in the Giessen system - other fees may apply in other systems.

Ride pause:

 - Selecting the parking function during an ongoing bike rental (within the nextbike APP) allows for a ride pause with subsequent locking of the bike outside of stations. Other users will not have access to the bike during this time. However, the ride time continues as there is no return. If the free minute quota is exceeded, a usage fee will be charged (according to the current terms and conditions of nextbike).

- For multiple use of the free minutes (Giessen students or users annual rate), a ride interruption of at least 15 minutes by return is required.

Return:

- Return is only possible at designated stations.

- In case of overcrowding of a station, parking and return of the bikes is possible within a radius of approx. 20 m around the station sign.

- If the rental bike is parked outside the radio range of approx. 20 m, the user will be charged a penalty fee.

- Overcrowded and empty stations are regularly redistributed by a nextbike service team.

More information about the rental bike system is available directly from nextbike by TIER Gießen.
