Researchers can find compact information here on national and international foundations as well as insights into their funding opportunities and support programs.

Foundations generally fund research on a specific topic on the basis of a statute or foundation purpose and can thus react flexibly to social, technological or ecological challenges. The VW Foundation, the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, the Gerda Henkel Foundation and the German Federal Environmental Foundation are among the most prominent foundations supporting research at JLU.

Alexander von Humboldt Foundation

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation promotes academic cooperation between excellent foreign and domestic researchers from all disciplines through research fellowships and awards. Of particular note are the Feodor Lynen Research Fellowships for domestic postdocs and experienced researchers, which promote research stays abroad (analogous to the Humboldt Research Fellowships for foreign researchers), as well as the Henriette Herz Scouting Program for outstanding (junior) professors and (junior) group leaders.

Böhringer-Ingelheim Foundation

The Böhringer-Ingelheim Foundation promotes scientific excellence in basic research in the medical, biological, chemical and pharmaceutical sciences. In addition to awarding science prizes, the Foundation supports junior research group leaders in the development of their own research profile (Perspectives Program Plus 3), researchers with original, innovative ideas (Exploration grants) and newly appointed researchers (W2) through start-up funding (Rise up!).

The German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) promotes innovative, exemplary and solution-oriented projects to protect the environment, with a particular focus on small and medium-sized enterprises. Funding is provided in the form of scholarships (doctorates, fellowships), project funding and topic-specific funding initiatives in the areas of climate change, environmental protection, biodiversity and resource management.

The Fritz Thyssen Foundation is aimed at (early career) researchers in the humanities, social sciences and biomedicine. It supports them in the four funding areas "History, Language & Culture", "Cross-sectional Area 'Image-Sound-Language'", "State, Economy and Society", and "Medicine and Natural Sciences" in the funding formats of research projects, postdoctoral fellowships, travel grants, printing grants and conferences.

The Gerda Henkel Foundation supports national and international individuals and research groups in the historical humanities through general and specialized funding. General funding includes research projects, research grants and doctoral scholarships. Funding priorities - currently patrimonies and democracy - are advertised for a limited period of time and promote research into problems in a wider historical context as well as topics relating to the present and future.
