Contents

The aim of this programme is to make students competent in the use, philology and culture of their chosen languages as well as to give them a practical and professionally relevant understanding of the countries' cultural and business milieux, which is achieved by a compulsory semester abroad and work placements during their studies.

The emphasis is placed on equipping students with applicable knowledge of linguistics and literature as well as cultural and business studies, with particular attention to more recent language. In linguistics, this means an increased focus on text linguistics, conversation analysis, corpus linguistics, sociolinguistics and pragmatics. In literature, centre stage is taken by 19th- and 20th-century texts, less recent eras largely being left to the purely philological programmes of study. Language training also has considerable weighting, a large proportion of it concentrating on business language and designed with an eye on the practical demands of professional life.

Subject-specific prerequisites

Please note: In this course of study different prerequisites are required for the different combinable subjects. For the languages English, French, and Spanish - no matter whether they are chosen as major or minor subjects - students must provide proof of  the required language skills before the start of the programme (upon matriculation at the latest). Please read the information on the proof of necessary language skills and contact ZSB@uni-giessen.de for further questions.
