Composition of the Study Programme

Composition of degree programme

The Bachelor's degree programme comprises

  • a major from Philology 1 (English, French, or Spanish),
  • a minor from Philology 2 (English, French, Spanish or Portuguese) and
  • a second minor which focuses on teaching the language chosen as a major subject (Teacahing English as a Foreign Language or Teaching a Romance Language).

The programme transmits fundamental knowledge and significant recent research results in English and Romance studies as well as the teaching of them. The programme facilitates the students' familiarisation with the language, literatures and cultures of the various countries in which English, French, Portuguese and/or Spanish are spoken.

The students must spend a semester abroad and complete a period of teaching experience. In the major subject, students must complete a total of 9 modules including a dissertation module. Each module is worth 10 CP. For the minor, students must complete 4 foundation modules worth 10 CP each. As far as the teaching modules are concerned, students must take 4 at 10 CPs each, of which one must be taken during the semester abroad and one must be a period of work experience, including the preparation and retrospective analysis seminars. Furthermore, 10 CP have to be gained in the field of "extradisciplinary skills".

International dimension

The Bachelor's dissertation can be written in German, English or French, subject to suitable provisions being available for its evaluation. The work experience can be done abroad or after the semester abroad. Vocational placements abroad which correspond to the aims and subject matter mentioned above are encouraged and recognised on the basis of evidence provided.

Bachelor's dissertation

Almost half of the 6th semester is dedicated to the writing of the dissertation. The dissertation is intended to allow the student the opportunity to prove that he/she is capable of producing independent academic work within a limited period of time. The dissertation is graded by two examiners.
