Overview

The Master's programme Choreography and Performance is a consecutive programme based on relevant Bachelor's degrees in theatre studies. Further information on the admission requirements can be found under  "Application".

The international Master's programme at the Institute for Applied Theatre Studies is offered together with the Department of Contemporary Dance at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts (HfMDK) in Frankfurt am Main. Students can choose from a wide range of practical and theoretical courses in choreography and performance, dance and theatre studies.

The programme combines body and practice-oriented approaches with a critical and reflective approach to dance and performance. In the courses of your study, you will be trained to have a broader understanding of choreography. Physical means of expression such as dance and movement are not only tested and reflected upon as artistic means, but are also discussed with regard to their relevance for contemporary aesthetic, social and political contexts. In order to help you to position yourself independently in your working method in the context of contemporary art production, special attention will be paid to contemporary international dance and performance art and its working and production methods.

The seminars offered in the Master's programme consist of events organised by the Institute for Applied Theatre Studies in Giessen, the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts and other partners of the Hessian Theatre Academy. An important part of the Master's programme revolves around practical work. Through a wide range of scenic projects, practical courses, physical training, dramaturgy and mentoring courses, methods and techniques for independent artistic work are taught. Guest professors and lecturers from the field of contemporary art production enable you to engage with relevant discourses and positions.

There are numerous cooperations with cultural institutions in the region, such as Tanzlabor 21, Künstlerhaus Mousonturm and Frankfurt LAB, so that students can easily find opportunities for the professional realisation of their projects.
