Starting in WS 2022/23 the M.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies on Eastern Europe will be available in German or English. The available minor fields of study differ in the English and German options. See the “Composition of the Study Program” tab for more information.
The aim of the study program is to impart interdisciplinary cultural and methodological competencies related to Eastern Europe. Cultural, historical, legal, political, and economic processes in Eastern Europe are analyzed, considered, and evaluated. Students will learn about and critically evaluate various models and theories, as well as develop their scientific judgment and linguistic expression and communication skills. Students will carry out independent analyses of complex issues and will plan, implement, and evaluate an independent research project on Eastern Europe.

Composition of the Study Programme
The 2-year Masters’ program (120 CP) consists of a major subject (50 CP) and two minor subjects (20 CP each), and is completed by a Masters’ thesis in the major subject (30 CP). The Masters’ thesis should be interdisciplinary. The following subjects can be selected:

Commencement of Studies
The German option may be started in the winter or summer semester. The English option can only be started in the winter semester.
Admissons Requirements
Admission requirement is a relevant Bachelor's degree (or an academic degree recognised as equivalent). Bachelor's degrees are considered relevant if the previous degree programme has provided knowledge in the selected Master's major subject to the extent of 20 CP and in one of the selected Master's study elements to the extent of 10 CP. The degree programmes Teaching at Hauptschulen and Realschulen, Teaching at Gymnasium, Teaching at Vocational Schools are also recognised if the subject History or a Slavic language was successfully studied.
Language requirements
Depending on the chosen major subject, the following language skills are required:
- very good knowledge of a Slavic language for the major subject Slavic Studies
- very good knowledge of an Eastern European language for the History major
The degree programme can be studied in English. For this, language skills in English are required and must be proven as follows.
a) by a language certificate, level CEFR B2
b) by passing an English examination at a university which verifiably certifies level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and is not older than two years
c) Proof of the ‘UNIcert II’ certificate
d) TOEFL test ITB (internet-based test) with at least 80 points or IELTS test with at least a score of 6 in the academic test
f) Proof of completion of an English-language Bachelor's degree programme
g) other suitable proof of English language proficiency at CEFR B2 level
h) The examination board decides on the recognition of other language certificates.

The degree program is not admission limited; there is no cap on admissions.
