Subjects

Teaching subjects

The two teaching subjects consist of the actual subjects themselves and the teaching strategies for these subjects. For the course of studies for the teaching qualification for grammar schools two subjects which may be combined freely must be chosen from the following list. (Please also read the information about the choice of subjects and the foreign language requirements, given below the list.)

  • Biology 1,4
  • Chemistry 4
  • German 4
  • English 2
  • Geography
  • Protestant Theology 2,5,7
  • French 2
  • History 2,5

  • Greek (Ancient Greek) 2,5
  • Informatics
  • Catholic Theology 2,5,7
  • Art 3,6
  • Latin 2
  • Mathematics 4
  • Music 3,6
  • Philosophy 2
  • Physics 4
  • Politics and Economics
  • Russian
  • Spanish 2
  • Sport 3

Requirements:

1 Probably limited acceptance of students in the winter term 2018/19
See language requirements

3 See aptitude test. This takes place before commencement of the degree programme.
4 Please see preliminary course.

5 For students without a Latinum (Latin qualification), a preliminary course will be offered as an alternative to a Latin course during the semester. This course  is particularly recommended for prospective students of the subjects Protestant and Catholic Theology, Greek and Latin who have not acquired a Latinum since the parallel learning of the languages Latin and Greek during the first two semesters is a heavy load.

6 The combination of art and music is not possible. Further details concerning the choice of the second subject can be found below.

7 For teaching the subject Protestant Theology/ Catholic Theology and in order to hold denominational classes, a teaching permission for the subejct Religion is required (as it is the case with all other confessions).

The study of the subjects Art and Music involves a higher work load as the study of other subjects within the teaching qualification for grammar schools degree course. The work load is expressed in credit points (CP - "Leistungspunkte" or "LP" in German); Music and Art comprise 120 CP each, other subjects within this degree course comprise 90 CP. Therefore, the second subject which is combined with art or music is only studied for teaching at "Sekundarstufe I"- level (60 CP). Accordingly, please choose the second subject from those available for the teaching qualification for lower-secondary education. Please note that the second subject cannot be taught in the years 11-12 (Oberstufe) and that the subject "work studies" is not taught at grammar schools. The second subject can also be studied as a regular grammar school subject with 90 CP ("Sekundarstufe II"). However, it will not be possible to finish studies within the regular number of semesters in this case.

Information about the content of the individual subjects can be found in the Course Structure Diagram and the List of Modules.
Justus Liebig University offers teacher training classes in the same semester which do not collide or overlap. In this way students working for a teaching qualification are able to complete the course of studies within the planned number of semesters.

To make this possible, classes in subjects which to date have rarely been combined are now offered at the same time. Therefore, JLU does not support these combinations any more. As a result, it is still possible to study these combinations but with the limitation that it will be nearly impossible to finish within the regular number of semesters. The combinations which were thus affected were, for example:

  • Biology/Informatics
  • Chemistry/Russian
  • German/Chemistry
  • Geography/ Physics
  • Geography/French
  • Geography/Philosophy
  • French/Philosophy
  • History/Physics
  • Latin/Spanish
  • Latin/Informatics
  • Informatics/Spanish
  • Physics/French
  • Greek/English
  • Physics/Philosophy
  • Politics and Economics/Chemistry
  • Politics and Economics/Russian
  • Protestant /Catholic Theology and Geography
  • Protestant/Catholic Religion/French
  • Protestant/Catholic Religion/Philosophy
  • Protestant/Catholic Religion/Physics
  • Art/Work Studies
  • Music/Work Studies

If three or more subjects are studied in combination, one must expect not only that the completion of studies in the regular period of time will be impossible because of the larger amount of material to be dealt with but also because the guaranteed avoidance of subjects colliding is not possible with such a broad combination of subjects.

The university is not going to block the subject combinations mentioned above but it cannot offer a chance to complete such courses of study in the regular study period. Students who enroll in such courses of study at their own risk will not be hindered.
