What must be appended to an application for the Deutschlandstipendium?

Applications for a Deutschlandstipendium must include a curriculum vitae (tabular), evidence of their university admission eligibility (first-year students) or evidence of their academic achievements (from the 2nd semester onwards in the Bachelor's or Master's degree programme). Insofar as already available, a current enrolment certificate must also be enclosed.

In addition, applications must be accompanied by a letter of motivation (max. 1 page, approx. 3000 characters). Besides outlining why the study programme has been chosen, the letter should contain statements about the applicant’s potential, indicating in particular:

a) particular achievements, awards and prizes, previous employment and internships, and

b) voluntary work, social or (university) political commitment or practical involvement in religious communities, non-profit or professional organisations or associations, and

c) special personal or family circumstances such as illnesses and disabilities, caring for one's own children, particularly as a single parent, or looking after close relatives in need of care, working in the family business, study-accompanying employment, family origins or a migration background.

Particular achievements, volunteer work or special family circumstances must be documented by certificates or testimonials/references.

Documents have to be in German or English.

Note: The letter of motivation may no longer be required from 2026 onwards. Please check the website at the start of the application period for any changes to the application process. Until the application period begins, we kindly ask you to refrain from enquiring about the letter of motivation, as no binding information can be provided at this stage.
