EOC Roundtable Series: ‘Pursuing an Academic Career in Germany’: Struggles of Pursuing an Academic Career in Germany (as a Woman)

The third roundtable discussion organized within the series “Pursuing an academic career in Germany” deals with “Struggles of pursuing an academic career in Germany (as a woman)”, and is therefore primarily tailored to female graduate students. Nonetheless, the session will also be relevant to every graduate student, as issues concerning career management, personnel structure, alternative career paths, which are not necessarily a professorship, will be addressed. The focus of this session lies on the potential struggles and possible solution approaches to the most common hurdles in planning and pursing an academic career and professorship. Additionally, the discussion will address struggles of accommodating family and career as well as the specific obstacles of female scholars in German academia.

• PD Dr. Astrid Franzke has been associate Director of Mentoring Hessen until February 2021. Mentorin Hessen is a program that supports female students, graduate students and post-docs in their career management. She was part of aligning the conceptual and strategic focus of the first phases of the influential and successful program. In 2007, she started her work on the program ‘ProProfessur’ at the Goethe-Universität Frankfurt.
• Silke Rapp is part of the human resources development of JLU and specifically concerned with the Postdoc Career and Mentoring Office (PCMO). Her responsibilities include career advice and mentoring of post-doctoral students. In former years she directed the mentoring program MeWisMa between Marburg and Giessen University.
• PD Dr. habil. Birte Christ is lecturer in American Literary and Cultural Studies at the English department of JLU. She is research assistant to Prof. Dr. Greta Olson. Birte has thought about and talked to a  lot of women academics about the challenges they are facing, since she led the project “Mehr Zeit für Forschung/More time for research” from 2018-2020, which was funded by the Ideenwettbewerb Frauenförderung at JLU, and provided women postdocs with children with a research assistant for one semester.
• Dr. Elizabeth Kovach is the coordinator of the IPP. She pursued her PhD at the GCSC and IPP on Novel Ontologies after 9/11: The Politics of Bring in Contemporary Theory and U.S.-American Narrative Fiction (2018).
