"Sexualized & gender based violence against refugees in Greece – an experience report"

Susanne Jörg

186,000 refugees were hosted in Greece 2019 (UNHCR:2020). Refugees are exposed to SGBV during all stages of their migrant journey. Among this group, especially women and girls as well as members of the LGBTIQ+ community are at a high risk to be affected by SGBV.

In 2019 Susanne Jörg worked for seven months for an INGO in Athen and at the islands of Samos and Chios with the focus on SGBV prevention. During this time, she gained insights into the situation of refugees – especially regarding SGBV. Her presentation is based on this experience and is tackling topics such as the risk factors for SGBV, specific forms of SGBV, groups at risk as well as the structural causes. To create awareness to the living conditions of refugees at the outskirt of Europe, Jörg will share details of her work and portray the situation.

The presentation will last about 40 minutes. After the presentation there will be time for questions and discussions.

  • Moderation: Dr. Rosario Figari Layus

The presentation takes place within the context of the seminar "Theory and practice of engendering peace and conflict" and the chair of Peace Studies
