Your Request

The use of digital media in university teaching offers many advantages for lecturers and students - but often also raises new questions for lecturers: What possibilities do I have to support my teaching with digital media? Which legal aspects do I have to consider? Which tools and which methods are best suited for my teaching situation, my target group and my learning/teaching goals? How much time and effort does the use of a particular tool require - and what are the benefits for me and my students?
These are just a few of the questions you (have to) deal with if you want to use digital media in your teaching.
With the E-Learning Lunch Bag Session, we would like to offer you regular opportunities from the winter semester 2018/19 onwards to clarify these and other questions in exchange with colleagues, to share your own experiences and to develop new ideas together with other participants.

Our Service

The E-Learning Lunch Bag Session was set up to give you the opportunity to exchange all your questions and experiences about the use of digital media in university teaching in a relaxed atmosphere. The staff of the "Lehre 4.0" project will be on hand to advise and assist you.

The offer is intended to support you in...
...constructively use of digital media in university teaching.
...realistically assessing the advantages and disadvantages as well as the costs and benefits of using special e-learning tools.
... reflecting and conceiving e-learning/blended learning scenarios together in exchange with (interdisciplinary) colleagues - and applying ideas from different subject areas to your own teaching practice if necessary.

Save The Date

The events take place once a month, every Wednesday from 12.00 - 14.00 h. The meetings take place at lunchtime - you are welcome to bring your own lunch, coffee, water and a snack will be provided. Here again all individual appointments at a glance:

Interactive whiteboards, often called SMART boards, are finding their way into more and more universities and sometimes completely replace the chalkboard and beamer. However, the correct handling of these devices often proves to be a challenge in many respects. The interest and curiosity in interactive and digital blackboards is great, the application scenarios in teaching are versatile but still untested. In this lunch bag session we would like to give you an overview of the devices and their use by presenting the free software Open Sankoré, which can be used freely. In addition, you will have the opportunity to interact with the interactive whiteboard and get inspiration for your university teaching.

This event takes place at Zentrum für Lehrerbildung (ZfL), Rathenaustraße 8, Room 309, 35390 Gießen.

With Microsoft Office 365 Education, online Office documents (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) can be edited online, not only alone but also in a team. The "Teams" function is also available in Microsoft Office 365 and includes chatvideo conferencing and data exchange. As an alternative to Adobe Connect, JLU-Gießen is now using the Office application in order to optimally implement digital teaching at the university. We will introduce you to the application, explain the individual functions and show you how to integrate them into your teaching in a didactically meaningful way. After registration, you will receive instructions on how to register with Microsoft Office 365 Education for the first time.

Digital accessibility. Digitally supported teaching and learning constantly poses new challenges for teachers and students, but at the same time offers numerous opportunities for participative and inclusive participation in order to make teaching more accessible. Dr. Steffen Puhl, Coordinator for Accessible Study Information Systems and Inclusive IT at the University Computer Center of JLU Giessen, will demonstrate what is important, for example, in the barrier-free design of learning videos, PowerPoint presentations and digital documents so that they are accessible and usable for students with disabilities. We would like to sensitize you to "invisible" hurdles in everyday teaching that students may encounter and show you how to recognize and avoid digital and didactic barriers in web and e-learning offerings.

Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality are considered to be the technology of the future and are increasingly used by companies, especially for the further education and training of their staff. Real work situations can be simulated and special learning scenarios implemented. However, it is still unclear in which direction this technology will develop in the next few years. This workshop would like to give an overview of the current state of the art, previous research results and previous application scenarios. The participants will also have the opportunity to test individual applications in VR/AR. Finally, an outlook on how virtual learning scenarios can be created will be given.

Tablet, laptop (or smartphone) required.

Explanatory videos allow complex information to be presented in a short, concise and visually appealing manner. Explanatory videos are short videos that use drawings or animations, but also pictures. The use of explanatory videos is diverse in university teaching. As an alternative to lectures or as part of lectures given by students, university lecturers can activate, reach, reuse and reproduce their plenary themselves through the forced use of explanatory videos. Using the example of the browser-based software Powtoon, we demonstrate how explanatory videos can be designed, what needs to be considered in production, what options are available in the design of explanatory videos, and we discuss how they can be used didactically in teaching.

The origin of Escape Rooms can be found in the digital world, but it is also experiencing a true boom in real space as Live Escape Rooms (also called Exit Rooms/Games). The principle is the same: The players find themselves in a locked room and have to escape from this room within a certain time by giving clues and solving puzzles. Most Escape Rooms are used for entertainment, although this genre is also found in university teaching. This is because the game principle combines knowledge transfer with playful elements that contribute to learning effects.

In this LBS we are supported by the digLL@JLU team (digitally supported teaching and learning in Hesse). In close cooperation with the Hochschuldidaktisches Kompetenzzentrum (HDK) at JLU Gießen, the first virtual Escape Room is being created, which is intended to expand the e-learning competencies of university teachers on the basis of a game based learning concept. Using this escape room as an example, we will demonstrate what is important in the conception of a virtual room, what possibilities there are for designing escape rooms and we will discuss the didactically meaningful use of escape rooms in teaching.

Digitally supported tests are suitable for testing and activating students' prior knowledge or checking their learning success. On ILIAS, such tests can be created outside or inside course units. These formative tests accompany the learning process of the students and can be evaluated automatically.

In this LBS we take a closer look at the steps that need to be taken into account when creating a new ILIAS test, the function of the question pool for a test and how it can be adapted for different tests.

The venue will be announced.

Tablet, laptop (or smartphone) required.
