DFG-Projekt
In further developing the journal, we are pursuing five main goals:
Goal 1
Integrating the previously independent open access review journal KULT_online into the cultural studies open-access journal On_Culture as a future review section. To this end, we will develop an integrated workflow, adjust the publication cycle and rebrand the journal.
Goal 2
Technical development of the journal. This will include introducing machine-readable standards for output formats, developing tools for internal review processes, and integrating additional targeted plugins.
Goal 3
Further professionalisation of the internal organisation, particularly with regard to simplifying and ensuring the sustainability of workflows. The focus here is on continuously onboarding new editorial team members and creating an editorial handbook as part of an agile, collaborative documentation system.
Goal 4
Expanding the journal’s quality assurance to reflect its development into an established international journal with 20 issues of On_Culture and 73 issues of KULT_online. This will involve, among other things, increasing the transparency of the publication process on the website and developing plans for the further implementation of the highest Open Access (OA) standards.
Goal 5
Contributing to the Open Access transformation in the German academic landscape. In continuous consultation and cooperation with the DFG’s SeDOA consortium, scalable and transferable toolkits will be developed for other journals. This will raise the journal’s profile and support Open Access in Germany. In coordination with SeDOA, we will also organise workshops and other communication formats within Germany’s OA community.
Since its foundation and into the future, On_Culture has been organised as a scholar-led diamond open-access journal, with no commercial orientation, and has received sustained support from the International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (JLU Giessen).
Evidence of On_Culture’s high scholarly and technical standards can be seen in its early indexing in DOAJ and other indexes, such as WorldCat, BASE, Google Scholar, ERIH PLUS, Sherpa Romeo, and EBSCO. Furthermore, On_Culture adheres to the publication standards of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). All articles in the _Article category undergo external double-blind peer review, while those in the _Perspective and _Essay categories are reviewed internally by the editorial team.
All articles are published under a Creative Commons licence (CC BY 4.0), and all PDFs and HTML files include a machine-readable licence. Each article is assigned a persistent identifier (DOI) and archived long-term via JLUpub, JLU’s institutional repository.
In coordination with SeDOA, the aim of continuously developing targeted toolkits is to make the results of our project available to the German-speaking OA community.
On_Culture
The Open Journal for the Study of Culture is a biannual, peer-reviewed scholar-led diamond open access journal created and edited by doctoral researchers, postdocs and professors working at the GCSC. It provides a platform and forum for pursuing and reflecting on the study of culture. It investigates, problematizes and develops key concepts and methods in the field. More often than not, developing such new approaches and emerging topics is a collaborative and collective process. On_Culture is dedicated to fostering such collective processes and the cultural dynamics at work in thinking about and reflecting on culture.
