| We are very excited to announce the publication of On_Culture's 20th issue on "Celebration," and our 10th anniversary! |
| Issue 20 explores celebration in all its ambivalence: as a site where identity, culture, and power converge, but also where resistance, belonging, and collective joy are forged. Rather than taking celebration at face value, the contributions ask what festive practices perform and represent, and how they are entangled with political discourse, memory, and loss. |
| This issue features ten contributions examining celebration in a variety of contexts, ranging from early modern court banquets and national commemoration rituals to Colombian theme parks, religious processions in Mexico, reggaetón parties in the Latin American diaspora, and the social life of literature. Together, they show that celebration is never simply joyful but that its edges are often shadowed by grief, co-optation, and contestation, and that it is in this space of ambiguity that the most revealing cultural work happens. |
