Supplementary Certificate "Expanded Digital Competence" — What can you expect here?
The supplementary certificate “Expanded Digital Competence” is designed to enable you to delve deeply into the field of digital competence, broaden your digital skills, and develop a deep understanding of the subject. If you want to teach digital competence, continue your education in this area while pursuing your degree, or simply earn a supplementary certificate that can make a good impression on job applications, you’ve come to the right place.
“Expanded Digital Competence” can be taken as a follow-up course to the DigitalKompetenzPlus (DigiKomp+) supplemental certificate, but it can also be taken separately.
You can switch at any time from the basic supplementary certificate DigitalKompetenzPlus to the advanced supplementary certificate “Expanded Digital Competence” and vice versa.

What does the Supplementary Certificate "Expanded Digital Competence" contain?
In the supplementary certificate Expanded Digital Competence, you will explore all five areas of competence: “Communication and Collaboration” (K1), “Problem-Solving Skills” (K2), “Creating Digital Content” (K3), “Information and Data Literacy” (K4), and “Digital Security” (K5). This confirms that, in the comprehensive supplementary certificate, you have covered the full breadth of the subject area “Digital Competence.”
In the Fundamentals Section, which is mandatory for both the small supplemental certificate DigiKomp+ and the large supplemental certificate “Expanded Digital Competence”, you’ll learn everything you need to know about digital competence. This is about more than just theory: You’ll become part of a team, create real-world projects, and document your progress in a personal portfolio. Here, you’ll explore the first two areas of competence (K1 and K2).
In the Applied and Advanced Courses, you can set your own focus and take courses based on your interests. You choose which courses interest you. On our website, you’ll find courses on various topics that you can use to complete your supplementary certificate. Here, you have the opportunity to choose courses from all areas of competence. Be sure to take at least one course (minimum 0.25 CP) from each of K3 through K5 to cover all competency areas, as this is a requirement for the “Expanded Digital Competence” supplemental certificate. In this area, you’ll earn at least 6 CP through courses. Unlike the regular supplementary certificate Digital Competence Plus, you can have entire courses credited toward this one. You can take as many digital competence courses as you like; the extended supplementary certificate will be issued to you based on the scope of courses you have taken, provided you have earned at least 6 CP in the Applied and Advanced Courses.
An individual Final Project is intended to further apply and deepen your understanding of some of the content you have learned in the foundational section and/or in the application and advanced courses. You will work on this project independently. To do so, you will discuss a potential topic with the certificate coordinator, who will support you in planning and carrying out the project.
Finally, you’ll reflect on your personal journey through the supplementary certificate in a portfolio and during a colloquium.

Your own Final Project
As part of the Expanded Supplementary Certificate, you’ll work on your own digital project. This could be something to support your studies or professional life, a digital presentation of content (e.g., an e-learning module or similar), or something entirely different. Please contact the certificate coordination before you start, to discuss and decide on a topic. You will then have a meeting with them to identify and/or narrow down the topic. The Certificate Coordination will also support you during the subsequent implementation.

Why do the Supplementary Certificate?
- Sharpen your profile: With the Supplementary Certificate DigitalCompetencePlus you put a clear accent on a skill set that counts in every résumé today—whether you’re aiming for a job in a company, self employment, or a career in research.
- Show what you can do: You receive a certificate that precisely tells potential employers what you have learned, which goals you’ve achieved, and how extensive your courses were. After completing the foundation section you also earn a project report that can be added to your résumé—an actual added value that sets you apart.
- Work on it whenever you wish: You have as much time as you need for the Zusatzzeugnis—you’re not bound to finish within a fixed period. The only requirement is that you are enrolled at the JLU. Likewise, you can take the course as short or long as the offered courses allow.
Learning objectives of the Supplementary Certificate
- You recognize the opportunities and challenges of digital technology and can ensure data privacy and security when using it.
- You use digital tools not only efficiently but also creatively and can actively participate in a digital society.
- You are well positioned in both academic and professional life to use digital technologies independently, competently, and reflectively.
