Metabolic Imaging of Photosynthesis using Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry Imaging
Hintergrund / Motivation: Global warming is expected to reduce crop yields due to increasing droughts and heat waves. C4 plants are more resilient to these conditions because they spatially separate key steps of photosynthesis. Understanding the evolution from C3 to C4 photosynthesis is therefore highly relevant for future food security.
Ziel / Aim: This project aims to study spatially resolved metabolic differences between C3, C3–C4 intermediate, and C4 plants. ToF-SIMS imaging will be used to map photosynthesis-related compounds at high spatial resolution. The results will provide new insights into the evolutionary transition from C3 to C4 photosynthesis.
Hinweise / Notes: The project is highly interdisciplinary, combining physics, chemistry, and biology. It is based at Justus Liebig University Giessen and includes research stays at the ESRF in Grenoble. Good English skills and strong motivation are required.
