Anniversary Year 2026

The year 2026 gives our center two reasons to celebrate: 25 years ago, the GGK was launched as the first graduate centre in the humanities and social sciences in Germany, and five years later, the GCSC was founded within the framework of the German Excellence Initiative. Both successes go back to the conceptualization and leadership of Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Ansgar Nünning, the founding and managing director of both institutions until 2025, and to the collective effort of an interdisciplinary team of principal investigators that network with us throughout JLU.

We are celebrating this double anniversary with a series of events that focus on both the plurality and the programmatic approaches of an interdisciplinary Study of Culture. As a special highlight, our anniversary conference entitled "Response-Abilities: Professing the Study of Culture in Times of Disruption, Entanglements, and Transformation" takes place on 25-26 June, 2026.

Regular updates on these and other events in the anniversary year can be found here on our homepage.

GGK/GCSC Anniversary Conference, 25-26 June, 2026

Our center is currently organizing an international anniversary conference (June 25-26, 2026) on the topic of “Response-Ability”. Together with a number of invited inter/national guest speakers, we are going to discuss responsibilities of the study of culture (and the possibilities to respond) in the context of political debates, ecological challenges, and societal concerns. We cordially invite everyone to join the exchange on the role of the study of culture and share your perspective.
