Topic of this workshop

CeO2-based materials exhibit excellent material storage properties that are beneficial in e.g. the heterogeneous catalysis and as oxygen ion conductor in high temperature solid oxide fuel cells. Storage properties are inherently deter-mined by the bulk material, while catalytic properties are surface dominated processes. Therefore the tailored interplay between bulk and surface properties is at the heart of catalytic applications of CeO2-based materials.

 

Unfortunately, there is an insufficient exchange of knowledge and concepts among the scientific communities “bulk versus surface” respectively “electrochemistry versus hetero-geneous catalysis”. This workshop should help to overcome this apparent “community gap” and open our minds for new applications.

 

Nanostructuring of CeO2-based materials is a modern synthesis concept to intensify the interplay between bulk- and surface defect properties. If CeO2 is however used as a carrier for the active metal particles, then the complex redox chemistry between the metal particle and the substrate may affect the catalytic performance. Ab initio theory helps to unravel the complex interaction between bulk and surface properties as well the supported metal particles and the substrate.

Objective of this course

The MCE-2015 workshop has been motivated by joint research within a collaborative LOEWE project on storage mechanisms. 

This workshop aims at the cross-linking of experts working on CeO2-based materials in the fields of electrochemistry, materials science, heterogeneous catalysis, computational chemistry and industrial application. Scientists from universities, research institutes and industry will have the opportunity to discuss and exchange problems and solutions in the field of CeO2-based materials.

The workshop is aimed at graduate students as well as senior and junior scientists in order to bring together all generations of CeO2- researchers in a spirit of mutual benefit.

Location and accommodation


The workshop and accomodation will be located in the castle Rauischholzhausen, which is located approximately 30 minutes by car from Giessen in the immediate proximity of the picturesque town of Ebsdorfergrund. It is probably by far the most attractive of all the university’s estates. Conferences, workshops, seminars and festivities are held here on a regular basis. Visiting the late-nineteenth-
century estate is like stepping into a fairytale, and taking a stroll through its lavish English landscape gardens is sure to soothe your soul.

Program and formalities

Registration fee of 300 € (220 € for students).

The registration fee includes three days accommodation, lunches, and coffee breaks. The number of participants is limited to a maximum of 65. Some rooms are double dorms. Participants are strongly encouraged to submit an abstract for a poster or oral presentation.

Abstract format:

Abstract submissions should be limited to a text body of about 3000 characters or one DIN-A4 page. Please use standard fonts like Arial, Times New Roman or Calibri and font sizes between 10-12 pt. These are guidelines only, shorter or longer abstracts, or other templates will also be considered. Please stick to the common formats of scientific documents.

 

Poster format

The poster walls are designed for tha A0 format (= 84.1 x 118.9 cm). Your poster should be in portrait format. 


Poster flash talk

For every poster there will be a flash talk of 2 minutes. Please prepare a PowerPoint presentation containing maximum 2 slides for teasing your topic and poster.
