Funding possibilities for junior researchers
The European Science Foundation (ESF) as a network of national academic organizations supports European research cooperation.  The ESF's work is organized into five committees in the following fields:

  • Physics and Engineering
  • Earth and Environmental Sciences
  • Medicine
  • Social Sciences
  • Humanities

Within the scope of the program, research cooperations can be funded for four to five years.  The programs can include the following activities: scholarships for junior researchers, academic visits, conferences, and publications.  The ESF only assumes the coordination costs; the expenses for the actual projects are incurred by the membership organizations.  A special funding program for junior researchers does not exist; however, funding possibilities exist in the individual sponsorship fields (academic conferencesk, research programs, etc.).

You can find more information, including the packets, grants, calls, and applications, on the webpages of the ESF's so-called Research Areas.

European Young Investigator Awards (EURYI)
To sponsor excellent junior researchers from all over the world, European research supporters and academic organizations under the umbrella of EUROHORCs (European Heads of Research Councils) announce the European Young Investigator (EURYI) Award. In the Federal Republic of Germany the German Research Foundation (DFG) is responsible for the program. The goal of the EURYI Award is to effectively sponsor outstanding young scholars for a duration of five years in one of the participating European countries.  In this way the career path of the next generation of leading researchers should be supported and simultaneously the attractiveness of the European research area in international competition should be sustainably incresased.

The Excellence Program, which is bound to the idea of early academic independence, is based on a memorandum of understanding that 18 academic organizations from 15 European countries signed.
