Collaborative Research

National, european und international Partners

As part of the further development of its cutting-edge research in large networks, JLU maintains outstanding collaborations with numerous national and international partners. In addition to regional collaborations - particularly within the framework of the Central Hesse Research Campus (FCMH) and the partners in the Frankfurt/Rhine-Main metropolitan region - JLU also has project-related national networks, such as in battery research. In addition, JLU relies on a strong international network based on long-term cooperation, with seven international priority regions currently identified (Australia, China [in progress], Colombia, [Eastern] Europe, South Asia [in progress], Southern Africa, USA/Wisconsin. International partner universities play a prominent role in numerous research areas at JLU. For example, the SPB "Cardiopulmonary System (Heart/Lungs)" cooperates intensively with partners in China (including University Medicine at Peking University, Tibet University in Lhasa), while the PB "Culture - Conflict - Security (SP Eastern Europe)" works closely with partners in Colombia (including Universidad de Los Andes in Bogotá) and in Eastern Europe (including the University of Lodz).

One instrument for intensifying international cooperation is the establishment of "Liebig Professorships", which enable JLU to retain professors working at foreign universities for the longer term.

Current Liebig Professorships at JLU

The "Liebig Professorship" is an honorary academic distinction awarded at Justus Liebig University (JLU). Named after the renowned chemist Justus von Liebig, who made a significant contribution to the development of modern chemistry, this title recognizes outstanding scientists for their outstanding contributions to research, teaching and innovation. The awarding of the Liebig Professorship underscores JLU's connection to cutting-edge research and recognizes individuals who enrich the university through their outstanding expertise and contribution to the scientific community and intensifies collaboration with them through a visiting professorship.

Regional Cooperation Partners

The formation of networks and alliances at regional level is primarily taking place in two directions: through the expansion of networks within the framework of the Central Hesse Research Campus (together with the Technical University of Central Hesse and the Philipps University of Marburg) and within the Rhine-Main metropolitan region. JLU attaches particular importance to continuing and strengthening cooperation with non-university partners. For example, joint appointments are an important instrument for networking with numerous institutes, in particular with non-university research institutions (Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Max Planck Society, Leibniz Association, Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers) and federal institutes with research tasks.

Non-university institutions in Giessen

JLU pursues a successful strategy of strengthening Giessen as a location (or secondary location) for non-university research institutions. The following non-university research institutions in Giessen are closely linked to the University's research and in some cases via joint appointments:

Non-university cooperation partners in the Central Hesse region

Important cooperation partners for JLU research in the Central Hesse region are institutes of the Leibniz Association and the Max Planck Society:

Non-university cooperation partners in the Hessian area of the Frankfurt/Rhine-Main metropolitan region

JLU's central cooperation partners in the Frankfurt/Rhine-Main metropolitan region in Hesse include the institutions listed below. There is an intensive connection with individual institutions through joint appointments:
