Cultures — their histories, their religious beliefs, and their forms of mediatisation — from antiquity to the present day are the focus of the perhaps most diverse department of JLU. This diversity is owed to a wide range of subjects, including Protestant Theology, Catholic Theology, Islamic Theology, Classical Archaeology, Classical Philology, History, Art History, Philosophy, and Turkology.

Researchers and students in the broad field of history and cultural studies can participate in an excellent scientific environment in Giessen: the JLU is home of one of the largest and most renowned historical institutes of the Federal Republic. The historical institute has an extensive Eastern European focus and the nation-wide unique study programme “Specialist Journalism History”.

The exceptionally close cooperation between the Christian theologies and the Islamic Theology opens up a theological environment that is highly productive for research and teaching, benefitting both students and researchers. In research groups, collaborative-, and teaching cooperation projects, extraordinary professional and content diversity merge into a vibrant and innovative knowledge community.

Students can participate in this knowledge community by putting together an individual course of study through a variety of combinations placing them on the right track to professionally qualifying degrees in the bachelor’s, master’s, and teacher’s programmes.
