Unfortunately, questions about sexual identity and sexual orientation have not been asked in conventional election studies to date. As a result, it was not known what political issues actually concern the LGBTIQ* community or which parties lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, intersex and other queer people (LGBTIQ*) vote for.
What are the political preferences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, intersex and other queer people?
The LGBTIQ* Election Study sets out to answer these questions. It is aimed at LGBTIQ* in Germany - a group in society that has so far been overlooked in traditional election studies.
The online questionnaire for the data collection of the LGBTIQ* Election Study for the 2025 Bundestag election was online for four weeks from 16 December 2024 to 13 January 2025. Initial results will be presented at a press conference in early February 2025 and subsequently published here on these pages.
The independent study is being conducted by a team of researchers from Justus Liebig University Giessen in cooperation with the LSVD+, Germany's main association for queer diversity. The project is being carried out without financial support from third parties. The election study thus provides new impetus for political debates and also for election research.
The LGBTIQ* election studies are anonymous and no personal data is collected or stored. The research team has been conducting such self-selective online surveys on various elections in Germany and Austria since 2015. Further information on the project can be found on these pages.
In the past, we conducted online surveys in the run-up to the federal elections in Germany (24 September 2017) and the national elections in Austria (15 October 2017), which looked at the political attitudes and voting behaviour of LGBTIQ* people. The LGBTIQ* Election Study 2017 is the LGBTIQ* election study with the largest sample worldwide to date. The results of these studies, as well as the pilot studies on the 2015 municipal elections in Vienna and the 2016 parliamentary elections in Berlin, can be found on this website.
The data collection for the LGBTIQ* election study for the 2021 Bundestag elections (26 September 2021) took place between 15 July and 15 August 2021 in cooperation with the Lesbian and Gay Federation (LSVD). The self-selective online questionnaire was online between 15 July and 15 August 2021. The first results of the LGBTIQ* Election Study for the 2021 Bundestag elections were presented to the public at an online press conference on Tuesday, 31 August 2021.
The LGBTIQ* election studies are very important for scientific, but of course also for political reasons - after all, the aim is to increase the visibility of the LGBTIQ* community, break down prejudices and fight for LGBTIQ* people to finally be adequately recognised in science and politics. The detailed results of the election studies will also be published online to stimulate discussion in the LGBTIQ* community and, of course, in political parties and NGOs.
