- Workshop on the Economics of Fixed Book Price Systems

The goal of the workshop is an economic assessment of the book market. The topics to be discussed include book quality and variety, the industry structure in general and the substitutability between the online and offline sales channel from the viewpoint of the consumers. A special emphasis will be placed on the analysis of fixed book price systems, which can generally be seen as a form of Resale Price Maintenance (RPM). There is no general consensus among competition economists regarding the efficiency effects of RPM. The resulting uncertainty about the legal treatment of RPM in the book market is exacerbated by the fact that books can be characterized as horizontally and vertically differentiated experience goods. To discuss all these topics, the workshop brings together researchers, competition experts and practitioners.
- Workshop on Financing and Performance of the European Rail Sector

In the workshop we aim at discussing the meaning and structure of public budget contributions to European railways as well as its implications on the performance of the sector. Topics of interest include approaches to compare the level of public budget contributions between countries as well as analyzes of the performance of the sector. A further topic concerns the regulation of the sector, since specific financing structures are likely to have a negative impact on incentives of market participants.

Der internationale Experte für verhaltensökonomische Industrieökonomie Prof. Dr. Paul Heidhues besuchte am 20. und 21. März 2017 die JLU Gießen. Im Rahmen des Doktorandenkurses Advanced Topics in Industrial Organization der Professur VWL 1 (Professur für Industrieökonomie, Wettbewerbspolitik und Regulierung) referierte Prof. Heidhues zur theoretischen Modellierung von Abweichungen rationalen Verhaltens von Nachfragern und anderen Marktakteuren und dem Einfluss dieser Abweichungen auf die strategischen Entscheidungen von Unternehmen.

Besuch von Prof. Doraszelski (Pennsylvania), einer der weltweit führenden Experten auf dem Gebiet der dynamischen Industrieökonomie, an der JLU im Rahmen des vom Fachbereich Wirtschaftswissenschaften veranstalteten Forschungskolloqiums - im Mittelpunkt stand dabei die Untersuchung des Einflusses von Unternehmensentscheidungen auf die langfristige Entwicklung von Sektoren.

Besuch von Prof. Harrington (Baltimore), einer der führenden Experten seines Fachgebiets, an der JLU Gießen im Rahmen des vom Fachbereich Wirtschaftswissenschaften veranstalteten Forschungskolloquiums - zentrales Thema der Veranstaltung waren Grundlagen und neue Erkenntnisse aus der Erforschung von Kartellen.
