Description
Biosamples in combination with phenotyping data are most valuable tools in translational medical research. The FB11-Biobank serves as a central platform to foster early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of various diseases and to facilitate translational research. The FB11-Biobank is an institution of the Faculty of Human Medicine of the Justus-Liebig University (FB11-JLU). It is an umbrella organization for the various partner biobanks of FB11-JLU, which all operate according to coordinated core processes and common guidelines (e.g., harmonized informed consent, overarching organization of the umbrella structure, common data protection concept, platform structures).
The basis for data and sample collection in the respective partner biobanks is the harmonized FB11 Broad-informed consent form based on the medical informatics initiative (MII) template, the broad informed consent template of the Working Group of the Medical Ethical Committees in Germany (AKEK) and the broad informed consent developed by the German Center for Lung Research (DZL). Under this broad informed consent clinical, phenotyping data can be either captured specifically via disease or organ-specific registries or from routine clinical records, and biosamples from all kind of specimen can be sampled, processed and stored in either (neuro)pathological archives, decentralized storage facilities or (in case of liquid samples) centralized in a semi-automated Liconic storage facility of the UGMLC Giessen Biobank (capacity 1 Mio aliquots).
At current, the following partner biobanks are belongingbelong to the FB11-Biobank:
- The University of Giessen Marburg Lung Center (UGMLC) Giessen Biobank, part of the DZL
- The European ILD Registry and Biobank
- The Neuro-Biobank
- CCC-Biobank
The FB11-Biobank is managed according to by-laws and by a coordinating committee, both of which will be set in place on occasion of the first meeting foreseen in Q4/25.
