COPD and Emphysema

Chronic smoke exposure results in chronic bronchitis, airway remodelling and emphysema.

Mitochondria regulate the function and survival of several cell types involved in these alterations, such as immune cells and epithelial cells.

We identifed the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) originating from NADPH Oxidases for development of murine smoke-induced emphysema.

This project focusses on regulation of mitochondrial ROS, apoptosis and senescence for development of smoke-induced airway and vascular alterations.
