The Academic Examination Office for Humanities is responsible for the administration of doctoral procedures in Departments 04 (History and Cultural Studies), 05 (Language, Literature, Culture) and 06 (Sports Science and Psychology: Dr. phil. only) on behalf of the Doctoral Committee for the Humanities Departments at JLU.
1 Acceptance as a doctoral candidate
At the beginning of the doctoral project, an application for acceptance as a doctoral candidate must be submitted to the Doctoral Committee. The following documents must be attached:
- Curriculum vitae including school education
- Certificates of the following degrees: Master & Bachelor, Magister or Diplom, last school-leaving certificate
- Language certificates in accordance with Annex 2 of the Doctoral Degree Regulations, if they are not included in the certificates
- Declaration of further final examinations, even if there are none
- Declaration as to whether a doctoral procedure has already been applied for elsewhere, even if not
- Supervision agreement with both signatures
The doctoral committee decides on applications three times a year (May, September, January). Applications should therefore be submitted by the end of April, end of August and end of December at the latest.
The original application and documents must be submitted to the Humanities Examination Office, Ms Barbara Pfeifer. Persons who did not complete their studies at JLU Giessen must submit certified copies of their certificates or present the original certificates in person. This is possible at any time during consultation hours.
2. Admission to the doctoral procedure
An application for admission to the doctoral programme must be submitted approximately six months before completion of the dissertation. The following documents must be attached to this:
- the composition of the examination committee agreed with the respective dean's office in accordance with § 9 of the doctoral degree regulations
- updated curriculum vitae, if applicable with a list of publications
- Proof of payment of the doctoral fee of €100 (account details are available on request)
- Proof of at least two semesters as a registered doctoral student (only applies to persons who have not studied at JLU and/or are/were not employed by JLU)

3. Submission of the dissertation and completion of the procedure
After admission to doctoral studies, the dissertation can be submitted. Six bound and one electronic version must be submitted to the Academic Examination Office for Humanities.
The assessment period is usually around 3 to 5 months. The reviews must be submitted exclusively to the Academic Examination Office for Humanities.
After receipt of the reviews, the dissertation and reviews are displayed for 2 weeks or 4 weeks during the lecture-free period in the Academic Examination Office for Humanities and in the involved dean's office. All professorial members of the participating faculties can inspect the work and write additional reviews.
At the end of the display period, the reports can be handed over to the author for inspection. The grade will not be announced until the defence.
The defence must take place within six months of the review and display period. The time and place must be agreed by the doctoral candidate with the members of the examination committee and the involved dean's office.
A thesis paper must be sent to the members of the examination board and the Academic Examination Office for Humanities approximately two weeks before the defence.
After a successful defence, the thesis must be published within two years in accordance with Annex 3 of the Doctoral Degree Regulations. In any case, a bound copy of the finished publication must be submitted to the Academic Examination Office for Humanities. The certificate and thus the title can only be handed over/awarded after publication.
